Should We Just Wear Terry All Summer? | Cup of Jo

The other day, I was walking down the street, minding my own business, when a friend approached me wearing a TERRY MATCHING SET. She looked beyond adorable, and when I gushed over her look, she told me, conspiratorially, “This is the third time I’ve worn it this week, and I think they might be pajamas?”

Kule has very cool terry sweatshirts and shorts. They’d make a comfy summer uniform — walks, picnics, playground hangs, pool days, beach vacations, road trips, long flights, evening drinks — don’t you think? (Less splurgy version here.) Fake two-piece

I also like these hats and this romper.

And for kids, these little numbers. Belly forward, babies!!!

Thought? Would you wear terry? (These sandals are cute, too.)

P.S. The best sneakers for long walks, and what’s something you splurged on?

For everyone thinking terrycloth shorts are too heavy for summer, I can tell you, they work great! I’ve had two pairs forever, in white and black, and they never look wrinkled or “worn”, lightly soak up any sweat but never feel soggy, and never ride up. The only bad things are 1) mine don’t have pockets, and 2) the company I bought them from no longer carries them. :-( If you’re on the fence, go for it! Here’s a similar style (with pockets!) from Amazon. I know, I know, but sometimes you need to use it: https://amzn.to/3BBnzYa

What is the exact set of the blue terry sweatshirt and shorts from the first photo? Been trying to find – gorgeous color!

It’s from Kule from last season. I own it and adore it — agree that it is a gorgeous color. It is also a great cut and soft fluid fabric. If you like this year’s colors I highly recommend (I’m eyeing the lilac) https://www.kule.com/collections/sweatshirts/products/the-franny-green

Ok, I WANT to like wearing terry but I feel like it just absorbs EVERYTHING, especially water and sand, which is not the look I’m going for in the summer.

I am ON THIS TRAIN! For added luxe/ polish I love Province of Canada’s collection of French terry sets (all made in Canada): https://provinceofcanada.com/collections/french-terry

This is one of those “good for her, not for me” type things. There’s something about terry that makes me feel too much like I’m wearing a towel, and I don’t find it comfortable at all. I do like matching sets for summer, though!

I love terry. I just bought this dress: https://www.marc-o-polo.com/en-us/p/terrycloth-polo-dress-in-a-relaxed-fit-made-of-organic-cotton-343422759013_462 and love it. I have worn it already a couple of times — it feels like wearing my pj and yet I look somewhat :-) put together. To me it feels very classic, I am sure I will wear it many years.

It’s cute! But the kind of trend that will be filling up donations centers by next year.

THIS. It will come and go. Also, $150 for terry material is insane. Save the money and let the trend pass. If you can’t – make sure to drop off at H&M when you stop wearing it. They at least recycle all materials (and give you a 15% off card)

Oh, funny. I don’t see any “trend” here except the matching set aspect. Otherwise this is just classic American sportswear. I own the blue set in the top photo (purchased last spring) and I wear them constantly. Tired of sets? Wear them separately. No need to donate. Well made, classic clothes never go out of style.

Love the blue outfit. I’d like to find some terry shorts that are a bit longer. Short shorts do not work well for me. With the terry comfort factor, it would completely come together with a little bit more length. Any suggestions?

These are more sweat shorts than terry material, but I just bought these longer length shorts from Uniqlo and immediately put them on when they arrived, they are that comfortable: https://www.uniqlo.com/us/en/products/E456030-000/00?colorDisplayCode=62&sizeDisplayCode=003

I was obsessing over these shorts https://terry-t.com/products/cruise-shorts-giallo-yellow but I most likely won’t get it

omg their skirts are so cool! too bad they’re so expensive, going to see if I can find some on a resale site :)

I have them and they didn’t hold up in the wash. Don’t bother!!!

oh I’ll go read the post now, but just the title made me sad that I’m not in terry right now

hahaha wish I could beam us all into terry!

It’s soooo cute! I need a vacay up north so I have a reason to wear this! The fabric sounds miserable in the Southern heat and humidity.

I was going to say the same thing… looks cute but not for the South. It would feel like wearing a damp towel!

As a vintage collector, I have a 60s, a 70s and an 80s terry top in my dresser. :) Love how the classics keep popping back up!

My mother, who was a pretty good seamstress, made a terry robe for herself in the 70s before I was born. She passed away 15 years ago, but I have the terry robe in my closet and wear it once in awhile :)

These are $$$ but also very cute: https://simonefan.com/ –love an actual terry jacket!

I just bought those Gap terry shorts in black to match the button-up rust terry shirt they had last year. Can’t wait to wear it around town or over my 1-piece swimsuit at the lake! Also have a green terry romper for my 4yr old daughter to rock all summer long. VERY into this trend at 40.

Not a comment about terry but this is the first year I can ever remember I’m actually excited for summer dressing. I am loving the trend of matching tops and shorts (that certainly look like pajamas and can be found at reasonable price points). After the pandemic, working at home every day still, and becoming a mom two years ago, and rapidly changing styles, I’ve felt so lost when it comes to fashion. I’ve decided to embrace high waisted mom jeans (Levis 501s) in spite of the fact that my soft round tummy is the least flattering part of me. I also have some great one piece bathing suits. Now I just need to figure out enough excuses to wear “real clothes” this summer!

Lauren! I’m not a Mom myself, but your comment made me smile. Everyone deserves to feel good in what they’re wearing – ESPECIALLY you tireless folks balancing career and parenthood! (And I also love high-waisted jeans, despite a lack of abs!)

For those in the UK St Bert’s always has really cute options for both kids and grown ups. https://stberts.com/pages/search-results-page?q=terry

Their stuff is super cute. Thanks. Wish they were in U.S.

Love styling/color of the top photo with the pink birks!

im a linen person, but terry sounds like fun.

Wait. But does this exist in searsucker?!?!?

Stretch terry shorts 100% favorite summer shorts of all time. I wore them out. Coolest and most comfortable shorts fabric

I remember having a light blue terry zip up & pant set in the 90’s, my best friend and I matched 💁🏼‍♀️💁🏼‍♀️. I’m glad to take a closer look at the resurgence — I had written it off because I assumed it was still bath towel texture on the outside!

Yass. I had one in pink and wore that thing everywhere.

Those kids rompers are cute, but all I can think of are my 3 and 5 yo girls dropping those things on a public restroom floor when they have to go potty, lol. Blech.

Okay I’m obsessed. Is the blue set pictured from Kule? I can’t quite find it…

it’s by Kule, but it’s sold out! you might be able to find it on poshmark, eBay, etc. I love that color, too!

Good for her, not for me. 😘

I agree, Alli. Great for a woman with very toned, slender legs and skin that has the effect of a deep, year-round tan. Beautiful, effortless hair. The kind of woman who looks good in everything. For the rest of us…I can’t quite picture it. 🤷🏻‍♀️

All the comments about nostalgia and “just for kids” makes me want to wear terry just to rebel against the idea that there are certain things that we shouldn’t wear after a certain age. I’m turning 50 this fall, and I’m tempted!

Yes Seppie!!!! I love this!!

YAY! Thank you, Seppie. I’ll be 37 this year – so,not a kid – and seeing examples of other grownups wearing exactly what they want is absolutely inspiring.

Sure wish that romper wasn’t $200 😳

Oooh, a fashion post on a Monday — feels so luxurious! :)

Whaaaaat, the option to have an outfit that is also an absorbent towel, sign me up!

On babies and kids, absolutely (I had a purple and white terry cloth romper in kindergarden/first grade that I LOVED!) on adults, eh….

New to me brand, Monrow, https://www.monrow.com/collections/womens?utm_source=googletext&utm_medium=paidsearchbrand&tw_source=google&tw_adid=647485334367&tw_campaign=2017692666&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI9pezgbX4_gIVkxWtBh2sQgy7EAAYASACEgLSD_D_BwE

Also has some cute terry styles! I’m 💯 in!!

I had a Terry short outfit in the early eighties…. sigh

Me, too! A white top and shorts my mom made, which in hindsight might have looked like a diaper toga onesie? Not sure I can return to the scene of that sartorial misdemeanor…

This is in reply to Laura — I’m nominating “diaper toga onesie” for a comment of the week!

Bobby – how about as a band name?

The only Terry I respect when it’s hot is Pratchett.

Reminds me of my seventies childhood in the best possible way. I don’t think it’s for me anymore, but I think I’ll enjoy seeing other people wear it, especially if they go all in and wear it with pom pom socks!

This Saturday, we visited some friends on Fire Island...
