It’s more than just ensuring that your car looks clean. Dirt and other minerals picked up off the road can do damage to the exterior and underbody of your car. This is especially true in northern areas where cities and towns sand and salt the roads in the winter. These mixtures can stay on the roads and medians throughout the year and do plenty of damage to metal.
For one, they are affordable. Sure, an automated wash is convenient, but if you wash your car a lot, those transactions add up. Even when you purchase the proper cleaning gear, including sponges, buckets and hose attachments, it will still be cheaper in the long run. You also have control over the wash, how thorough you can be, and (crucially) how delicate to be.
It depends on the situation. If you routinely wash and wax your car, high pressure water could damage the finish. But if you are often on the beach or on a muddy trail, the pressure washer is a great solution to remove caked-on dirt, sand and mud. It’s also a great way to keep your underbody clean of road salt in the winter.
Remember the phrase “wax on, wax off?” The two-bucket method is similar. The first bucket is for the water with the soap mixed in, while the other is just plain water. You start from the top of the car, applying the soapy water in sections, and routinely washing your sponge with the plain-water bucket. Since there is bound to be dirt and grime on the car, the plain-water bucket keeps the sponge clean for the next section of soap application. Replenish the plain-water bucket as it starts to get cloudy.
Depending on how your property and driveway are set up, you could be washing harmful chemicals into the environment. Some driveways are designed to run off into drains on the street, but those are often direct storm drains that also run out into local waterways. Professional car washes have their own drainage systems, but they are only as ecologically friendly as local regulations demand.
