Virtual quality control inspectors are responsible for ensuring the accuracy and good manufacturing workmanship of parts made. Additionally, they must review quality documents to ensure that customers’ requested processes and standards were properly executed. The job requires an unerring attention to details.
For Amy Hall, senior virtual quality control inspector at Xometry, it’s a passion. She finds wonder and beauty in the smallest of details at work and in her free time.
“My love for inspecting tedious parts has played a role in my love for looking for micro-animals while scuba diving,” says Hall, who obtained Master Diver certification, the highest non-instructor rank for divers, last summer. “Don’t get me wrong, a shark dive or running into an inquisitive sea turtle are also on my favorite list, but seeing an animal that is overlooked by so many divers going by and hidden from predators because of size is just amazing to me.”
It’s this desire to explore things from various angles and notice details that others might miss that led Hall to devote her manufacturing career to inspection. Her high standards in quality assurance (QA) brought her to Xometry (NASDAQ:XMTR), an artificial-intelligence-powered global online marketplace that connects enterprise buyers with manufacturing services suppliers. Hall shares below what a typical day looks like for her and her advice to women looking to advance their careers.
Amy Hall (AH): I live in a small town where you either work in a machine shop, grocery store, or bar. I started my career working for an injection molding business, where I would inspect the parts for flash and deformities.
After five years, there was an opening at the spring manufacturer where my father worked, and I was awarded the job. I started in the shipping area, then took bids in the production areas of the shop where I was setting up the machines and running the product before I was laid off and brought back as a temporary inspector replacement.
I found my niche and have been in inspection since! I worked for that company for over 19 years when I decided to apply to Xometry with coaxing from my best friend, Amanda Bower. I had every intention of retiring from my last job, but I trusted Amanda, and she knew I wanted to work for a place that took QA more seriously than where I was.
AH: We never know what we can do until we take the leap of faith and try. Do not be afraid of change!
AH: My training is all hands-on and taught by people more knowledgeable than myself. I learned by asking questions and making mistakes the old-fashioned way.
AH: College isn’t for everyone. Look into tech schools or find a company that is willing to train. Some of the best machinists that I saw walk through the doors had nothing more than common sense, were mechanical, and had the ability to pick up the trade quickly by watching and learning.
AH: From the end of April until the beginning of October, I work from one of my two campers. I have a permanent spot set up at a campground right next to where I grew up. As a child, I would come to this campground and play with all the camping kids, swim in the pond, and help with the horses.
Now I start my morning with a cup of coffee with my two German Shorthair Pointers, and we watch the deer and bunnies as the day begins. Then the dogs sleep while I work from 8 am until after 5 pm.
I am a scuba diver so I will dive any evening given the chance! The day ends with cooking on the Blackstone or sitting by the fire with my companion of 13 years, Scott.
